Lawn Care

When to start mowing in Rochester, NY

Task Monkey Services · July 18, 2026 · 4 min read

Most Rochester lawns are ready for their first cut somewhere between mid and late April, but the calendar matters less than the grass itself.

Watch the growth, not the date

Wait until the lawn is actively growing and standing about 3.5 inches tall. Cutting a dormant lawn tears the blades instead of slicing them, and that browned tip is what makes a yard look dull for weeks.

Keep the deck high early

We set mowers between 3 and 3.5 inches for the first few visits. Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture through a dry May and crowds out crabgrass before it germinates.

Clean up before the first pass

Sticks, road salt residue and matted leaves left from winter should come off the lawn first. A quick spring cleanup lets air and light reach the crown so the turf greens up evenly.

What we recommend

Book a spring cleanup for early April, then start weekly cutting once growth is steady. If you are unsure, send us a photo and we will tell you honestly whether to wait a week.
